Bayamo marked the 151th anniversary of the set on fire of the city

The people of Bayamo recalled on Sunday night the 151st anniversary of the set on fire of the city, one of the most intrepid feat of the history of Cuba.

Entitled “Volvieron al sitio las palomas”, the cultural gala was held at the Revolution Square, the first with this name in Cuba.

Directed by Juan Cedeño Oro, the evening recreated scenes of the event that took place on January 12, 1869, when hundreds of inhabitants preferred to set on fire their properties, rather than surrender to the Spaniard colonial domination, decision of sacrificing everything for freedom.

During the evening, artists such as the renowned singer-songwriter Raúl Torres, the singer Ary Rodríguez and actress Giselle Armas, who declaimed the poem “Un grito de consignas” among other local artists performed.

On the occasion, the singer-songwriter Raúl Torres premiered a song dedicated to the Bayames deed and its history.

In the central words of the ceremony, Samuel Calzada Deyundé, President of the Municipal Assembly of People´s Power,  pointed out that the burning of  the city was a fact that involved everyone in the formation of the national identity and moral of the Cubans.
