Army General Raúl Castro Ruz described the CIGB Mariel Biotechnological Industrial Complex as a treasure, the most modern in the country and one of the most advanced in the region, inaugurated this Monday.

“I congratulate you, you have a treasure in your hands and we will continue creating treasures,” assured the leader of the Revolution to managers and workers of the scientific-productive complex.

At dawn this Monday, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz and the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz Canel Bermúdez arrived at this high-tech industry located in the Mariel Special Development Zone, located about 45 kilometers from Havana.

In 57 months, this colossal work was built there, with one hundred percent Cuban capital, and belonging to the Business Group of the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries BioCubaFarma.

At the official inauguration ceremony -where the Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, members of the Political Bureau and the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Party, the Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdés Menéndez and vice-prime ministers were also present- the engineer Nathaly Suárez Palmero, director deputy of the Mariel Construction and Assembly company, praised the feat that constitutes having completed a work like this, financed entirely by the Cuban State, in the midst of a complex international situation. In a particular way, he highlighted the participation and decisive contribution of a valuable group of young people.

For his part, Doctor of Science Eduardo Martínez Díaz, president of the BioCubaFarma Business Group, investor of the CIGB Mariel Biotechnological Industrial Complex, evoked the innovative and visionary thinking of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro that materializes – he pointed out – through political will and the strategic decision of Army General Raúl, and the permanent support of President Díaz-Canel.

Eduardo Martínez Díaz confirmed that this productive scientific complex complies with the most demanding international standards of good manufacturing practices.

In this work – he emphasized – new construction systems were used that, together with the enormous effort made by all the participants in the investment process, allowed to reduce the execution times in this work that is considered one of the most advanced of its time in the Latin American and Caribbean region.

“This new biotechnological complex will assume the production of vaccines and drugs developed by Cuban scientists, aimed at diseases that affect humanity such as cancer, diabetes, autoimmune and cerebrovascular diseases, COVID-19, among others,” said the president of BioCubaFarma.

Similarly, he announced that “before the end of 2021 we will be starting the manufacturing process of the first batches of the Abdala vaccine, and for the year 2022 the introduction of the manufacturing process of eight new products is planned.”

When closing the opening ceremony of this biotechnological industrial complex, located in the Mariel Special Development Zone, the President of the Republic Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, who along with Raúl closely followed the investment process, made reference to the day chosen for the inauguration, just eight years after the Mariel Special Development Zone opened its doors to foreign investment, in the context of the International Fair of Havana on November 1, 2013.
