The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, assured today that the production of medicinal oxygen reached optimal levels and covers the daily needs of the island’s health system.
Through his account on Twitter, the head of state also reported that product inventories are recovering and highlighted the work to achieve these results amid difficult conditions.
More than 160 days ago the industrial gases plant (which concentrates 95 percent of the production of liquid oxygen in Cuba) suffered a breakdown which affected the production of this input, vital in the confrontation with Covid-19.
For this reason, on May 26 OxiCuba S.A. stopped its productions and began distributing from inventories and a small plant in operation.
Faced with the failure of the plant, Cuba had to look for alternatives to guarantee the supply to the hospitals through the provision of small factories, and the acquisition of this vital medical supply through imports and donations from various countries.
The emergency led to the installation of a national command post to efficiently manage availability, taking into account the needs of the territories.
Institutions such as the Revolutionary Armed Forces participated in the transfer, including by air, of this input.
However, since last September the plant began the adjustment and start-up process.
According to official sources, OxiCuba is capable of producing 70 thousand cubic meters of liquid oxygen daily, above the demand of the health system.
