Guisa agroforestry station develops important scientific projects

Guisa Agroforestry Experimental Station in the province of Granma, executes important scientific-technological projects that contribute to the productive increase of the productive chains of coffee, cocoa, coconut, forestry and other mountain agricultural productions.

William Santos Chacón, Master of Science, Auxiliary Researcher at the Agroforestry Research Institute and director of this scientific entity, specified that in the midst of the pandemic situation, the Station has not ceased its mission of providing the scientific and technological bases to several productive chains of great importance for the development of the province of Granma.

“We contribute to the development of important projects that contribute to the increase in production of the aforementioned productive chains and others of international collaboration with the Italian agency for development cooperation and with the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences, which have allowed us to introduce a group of technologies especially in the coffee production chain in whose experimental areas obtaining yields of 0.22 tons per hectare and up to over one ton per hectare ”, says William Santos.

These experiences are generalized today in producers and productive bases in order to achieve a development of the coffee program in the province.

“Another group of projects is aimed at the conservation of the forest heritage in our region with emphasis on species that show some category of threat, projects related to climate change and the life task, of extraordinary importance to maintain the vitality and resilience of our ecosystems ”, describes William Santos.

These projects are also aimed at providing producers with knowledge and a group of technical capacities through technical assistance and extension.

The substation in the municipality of Buey Arriba continues to work on the production of biological means for the control of pests in the crops we develop, with an emphasis on coffee.

The Guisa Agroforestry Experimental Station has 126 workers, 90 of them in Guisa and six in Buey Arriba, including scientists, specialists, research assistants and activity support workers.

Guisa’s station has a wide radius of action, in addition to providing technical assistance and developing projects in Granma, it also impacts provinces such as Holguín and Las Tunas, and in Santiago de Cuba very punctually in forestry activity.
