The General Director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, acknowledged and congratulated Cuba’s response to Covid-19, in a meeting held with the island’s Minister of Public Health, José Ángel Portal Miranda.
According to the Cuban head on Twitter, in the exchange, the general director of the WHO also highlighted the levels of immunization achieved with Cuban vaccines.
“@DrTedros recognized the good relations of #Cuba with the @WHO and expressed the will to take them to higher levels. He congratulated #Cuba for the response given in the confrontation with #COVID19 and the immunization levels achieved with Cuban vaccines,” Portal Miranda tweeted.
At the meeting, held within the framework of the 75th World Health Assembly, the Cuban minister shared the island’s experiences in confronting Covid-19, and aspects of the disease treatment protocol.
Likewise, he communicated elements associated with the development of products of the Cuban Biotechnology Industry, which have endowed the largest of the Antilles with sovereignty in the fight against the virus.
The Cuban Minister of Public Health highlighted that 96.7 percent (%) of the vaccinable population has completed their schedule, and 81.1% of the vaccinated population has received the booster dose.
Adhanom Ghebreyesus assured that he is following up the process of Cuban vaccines for their certification by the WHO.
Also, he highlighted the cooperation of the Caribbean nation with other countries, especially during the difficult months of combating the Covid-19 pandemic.
On behalf of Cuba, Portal Miranda congratulated Adhanom Ghebreyesus for his re-election to his position for a second term.
The 75th World Health Assembly began on May 22 and will run until May 28, and it is the first in-person since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The main functions of the World Health Assembly include determining the Organization’s policies, appointing its General Director, supervising financial policies, and reviewing and adopting the proposed program budget.
