A significant contribution to the food of the people produce more than 17 thousand gardens dedicated to different modalities of urban, suburban and family agriculture in the eastern province of Granma. 

Yurien Valdés González, head of the program in the territory, said that, faced with the needs of the population and in current fight against the Covid-19, every popular council works to encourage this productive modality aimed at family and community self-supply.

The preparation of all gardens as well as the recovery of other areas, contribute to the increase of deliveries of traditional crops and meat of poultry, rabbit, pig and sheep-goats.

According to the indications of the Ministry of Agriculture, he said productions are based on the use of natural inputs and biological control means, for which the province has 21 Entomophage and Entomopathogen reproduction centers.

Also, it is encourage the obtaining of organic, in which the workers and peasants produce the worm castings and the compost they need.

In Guisa, one of the towns with the best results, Jorge La Rosa Aguilar, farmer of the Eliseo Reyes Credit and Services Cooperative (CCS), harvests up to two tons of food on his plot, including vegetables, viands, condiments, coffee and fruit trees.

He also has a greenhouse where recently harvested a ton of tomato, and has 17 animals for the reproduction of the so-called dark-coated pig.

Like him, his brother Luis La Rosa Rodríguez, associated with the same CCS, highlighted the viability and benefits of promoting plots for providing its own food and of the community.

I don’t need to buy anything, here I produce what is necessary to prepare the food, he declared.

But his effort not only favors the family table, since he recently supplied cabbage, lettuce, carrots and radishes to the feeding of patients and health workers in the isolation center for suspected cases to the Covid-19.
