Arlenis Sierra: best athlete of the year in Granma

The cyclist Arlenis Sierra Cañadilla from Manzanillo, champion in the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, won the award of best athlete in Granma in 2019, as was announced this Wednesday in Bayamo.

Currently the main figure of Cuban cycling, Sierra Cañadilla, was also the captain of the Astana Women´s Team Club and achieved the 12th place in the road race Yorkshire World Championship, Great Britain, results that stand out.

While, the weightlifter Ludia Montero Ramos from the municipality of Rio Cauto deserved the distinction of most outstanding women’s individual sport, by winning two medals at the Championships held at Pattaya, Thailand.

With this result Montero Ramos became the first Cuban weightlifter winner in championship of that type, which was the province´s event of the year.

The distinction of most outstanding athlete in men´s individual sport was for the rower Eduardo González Montero, from Campechuela with silver and bronze in the Peruvian capital.

In collective sports, the handball players Frank Cordiez Castillo (Bayamo) and Liliamnis Rosabal Salazar (Río Cauto) were selected.

The 10 most outstanding athletes in 2019 were, the baseball player Alfredo Despaigne Rodríguez (Bayamo), member of the Pacific circuit, of the Japanese Professional League; he was also champion for the third consecutive year with the Softbank Falcons and surpassed the 150 homers in his sixth season in that contest.

In that group were also included the rower Rosana Serrano Fernández (Bayamo), the handball player Gleynis Reyes González (Campechuela), the gymnasts Claudia Arjona Torres (Manzanillo) and Elaine Rojas Rodríguez (Bayamo).

In addition, the softball player Wilfredo Sánchez Rosales (Bayamo), baseball player Roel Santos Martínez (Niquero), softball players Yilian Tornés Vargas (Jiguaní) and Yarianna López Boza (Bayamo) and the gymnast Marcia Videaux Jiménez (Manzanillo).

Therefore, the Softball received the award in the collective sports, with a recognition for the methodologist Danilo Anaya Vega.

The same happened with triathlon among individual disciplines, along with coach Henry de Sousa Norway and methodologist Maritza Estrada Infante.

On this occasion, the best teacher in training were Alberto Rosabal LLópiz and Enrique Carballo Ramírez (referee) both from Jiguani, along with  the activist Edilberto Matos Rivero from Bayamo.

The swimmer Lorenzo Pérez Escalona from the municipality of Niquero and the weightlifter Leidys Rodríguez Rodríguez (Bayamo), and coach Ramón Martínez Martínez, were awarded in the section of sports for the disabled.

In the youth category, Melissa Aguilera Peña (weightlifting) and Luis Naranjo Ávila (pentathlon) obtained recognition; in the school, Lester González Peña (swimming) and Soannis Corona Fernández (triathlon), and the Pionero Copa, Mailon Francisco Batista Ferrales (baseball) and Anaelis Roxana Almeida Fleitas (artistic gymnastics), all from Bayamo.
